Is your dog Positive for Heartworms? Here is some information on Immiticide.

What is Immiticide?

Immiticide is a powerful drug that is given by injection to dogs in order to kill an active heartworm infestation.  (It is not a drug that is used as a heartworm preventative.)  Even though this drug has many serious side effects, it is still the most effective treatment that we have to use on dogs who have heartworm.

Should I worry?

If your dog is consistently on a monthly heartworm preventative medication, he or she is at a very low risk of contracting heartworm disease.  Those hardest hit, unfortunately, will be rescues and shelters, especially in heartworm endemic areas, and pet parents who have adopted heartworm-positive dogs, as well as pet parents whose dogs have missed monthly doses of their heartworm preventative medication and become heartworm positive.

Remember: Your pet should be getting their heartworm preventative once every 30 days. In colder climates, prevention is often skipped during the coldest months of winter, since mosquitoes cannot survive. This does not apply in Georgia. Infected mosquitoes have been found during every month, even January. Sadly, it isn’t unusual for us to diagnose heartworm disease in a dog whose owner skipped preventative during winter
